Gateway’s youth in grades 7-12 are invited to join us on Saturday, January 18, for a day of fellowship and adventure as we explore the Chimney Rock Trail along the shores of Lake Martin in Tallapoosa County. There is no cost, but advanced registration is required (see below to register):
OUR HIKE:
This trail is a scenic loop trail totaling about 2.8 miles. About halfway in, there is a great scenic spot along the shoreline where we will have a short devotional time and discussion. The hike features a few hills with a total elevation gain of 325 feet. If everyone is doing well on the hike, we may also hike the loop around Kowaliga Bay, which adds about 1 easy mile to the adventure. To learn more about this hike, descriptions of this trail are available on All Trails and from the Cherokee Ridge Alpine Association.
Participants should pack a simple lunch to enjoy at the picnic tables after the hike.
OUTING DETAILS:
This outing is open to both guys and girls in grades 7-12.
We will meet at 9:30 a.m. on Saturday, January18, in the paved Gateway parking lot near the playground and church office entrance. We will carpool to the trailhead which is north of Tallassee. It will take about an hour to get there. We should return to Montgomery by late afternoon.
Important note - There are no restroom facilities at the trailhead or along the trail. However, we will make restroom stops in Tallassee both before and after the hike.
The youth ministry leaders for this outing are Mike Presley and Daniel Paulk. Additional drivers/chaperones include Brad Mooney and Grady Smith. More chaperones will be added if needed.
We will provide a group first aid kit, insect repellent, and extra water.
Each teenager will need to bring with them:
- Small backpack to hold your water and snacks
- Water (at least 1 liter)
- High-protein snacks for the trail (energy bars, beef jerky, trail mix, etc.)
- A simple lunch (sandwich, Lunchables, etc.) to eat at the picnic tables when we finish the hike.
- Light-colored, comfortable clothing – synthetic works best but cotton is fine for a day hike
- Sunscreen and a hat
- Hiking boots or sturdy athletic shoes with good soles
- Emergency poncho or rain jacket if there is a chance of rain
